Collateral is a 2004 crime thriller staring and headlining Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx, the film was directed by Michael Mann and written by Stuart Bettie.
This film incudes many different elements to talk about in terms of cinematography as it is a film that holds great use in terms of what we can learn about the filming and behind it in cinematography, such as: not having to set up lighting to film the coyotes and fox in a scene in the film as the camera had come with low-light setting meaning the camera was then again used to film in more movies such as Miami Vice. Digital camera is used quite often in the filming of this movie, such as when the Los Angeles background is evident in thee background.
Vital scenes in the film
The first scene to analyse is the briefcase scene, this scene shows us the cab driver strapped up to his car probably by Vincent, while the cab driver (Max) asks two men for help as they pass by one of the men see this as an opportunity to rob Max of Vincent's briefcase, from this as the two men walk away Vincent appears and calls after the men, the men come back and Vincent ends up attacking the men and then see's his opportunity, takes his gun out and shoots the two men, showing no remorse he takes his briefcase back from the men who stole it, and while it is evident the man is still barely alive after being shot, Vincent shoots him again to make sure he is dead, showing no remorse. The sound is very effective from the sound of the gun shots, showing that even in a city like this, Vincent doesn't care about who may here it.
Secondly, this clip 'pulled over' is where Max is pulled over by two cops, because he has a broken windshield, the cab driver tries to lie his way out of it but the cops see through this and eventually Vincent and Max are asked to step out of the car, suspense is high here, because Vincent warns that if they find out what is in the boot of the car it is all over, as the cops go to inspect the trunk, a shot is closed in on Vincent's gun suggesting he will kill them if need be, but suddenly, one of the cops gets a call about a shooting and leave straight away, creating relief and tension building effectively in this scene.
Thirdly, this scene is when Max and Vincent go to visit Max's mother in the hospital, it focuses in on Max's personal life and his struggles, and this is effectively shown through the close ups on his face to show he is struggling with Vincent and his mother getting along so well, Vincent is doing this to wind Max up, potentially threaten him subtly and learn more about Max's personality through his mother who seems to be negatively talking about him, or as if he isn't here, Max seems impatient and wants to leave and Vincent wants to stay and talk, suggesting the differences and contrast between two men and how through fate and chance they come together.
